Held from 17 to 28 August 2026 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will bring together States Parties, international organisations, public development banks, the scientific community, civil society, youth, Indigenous Peoples, pastoral communities and the private sector around a central issue: restoring land to strengthen the resilience of territories and populations.

Adopted in 1994, the UNCCD is the leading multilateral framework for sustainable land management, the fight against desertification and the mitigation of the effects of drought. Alongside the climate and biodiversity conventions, it is one of the three Rio Conventions. It carries a major ambition: achieving land degradation neutrality by 2030.

Held under the theme "Restoring land, restoring hope", COP17 will take place in a context marked by intensifying droughts, growing land degradation, pressure on natural resources and risks to food security. It will also be the first of the three Rio Convention COPs scheduled for 2026, giving it a structuring role in the international environmental agenda.

The AFD Group will take part in this new COP to reaffirm its commitment to sustainable land management, drought resilience, the transformation of agricultural and food systems, sustainable pastoralism, and the coordinated mobilisation of public and private finance.
