Clean cooking in Africa: an urgent priority for health and climate
Published on
Nearly 80% of households in sub-Saharan Africa still lack access to modern cooking solutions. Continued reliance on traditional fuels, such as wood and charcoal, poses major challenges for human development, public health, and biodiversity conservation.
To address this health, environmental, and economic emergency, AFD Group has committed to investing €100 million by 2030 through its Clean Cooking Facility, delivering on France’s commitment to clean, sustainable, and affordable cooking solutions.
From supporting entrepreneurial innovation through the Biomass Energy Africa program to expanding access to improved cookstoves and electric cooking, this approach protects forests, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and supports local industries – with the potential to create nearly 500,000 permanent jobs by 2040.
